AMONG ED SWEARS IN AS LIBERAL PARTY

QUEZON CITY—Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio Thursday morning took his oath as a member of the Liberal Party, further triggering whispers among Kapampangans that he will seek reelection in Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s home province. While the governor has not yet decided his next steps after his term ends next year, he joined the political party of Senator Noynoy Aquino as a matter of ensuring that the good governance practices he started in 2007 will continue no matter who the LP candidate is.

According to Among Ed, the ruling party in Pampanga holds much power. Joining a stable force in the form of LP can provide the machinery and organized support system needed to win the elections. In 2007, Panlilio ran as an independent, and won by only a slim margin. His campaign relied heavily on volunteerism and donations. Having a political party backing him will ensure a smoother campaign for a candidate that will continue the reforms started by Panlilio.

However, Panlilio also says that he will still run for governor next year, if and when the civil society groups that are looking for alternative reform candidates approach him again.

“I will let the people of Pampanga decide who is best fit to run for governor,” he insisted.

Aside from the benefits of a strong political party, Among Ed said he joined LP because he believes that its members embody good governance. Influential to his decision are his fellow Kaya Natin Champions Mayor Jesse Robredo, Governor Grace Padaca, and Governor Teddy Baguilat, who ran as LP in the previous elections. Aside from the three co-founders, several other Kaya Natin Champions have been members of the Liberal Party for quite some time.

Recently, Mayor Sonia Lorenzo and Mayor Florante Gerdan also decided to join the Liberal Party, mainly because of their support for Senator Aquino.

Panlilio also stressed that his father, a former councilor and vice mayor of Panlilio’s hometown of Minalin, was a Liberal Party member.

Among those who took their oath as LP members with Gov. Panlilio were former Senator Joey Lina; Gingoog, Misamis Oriental Mayor Ruthie Guingona, wife of former vice-president Teofisto Guingona, Jr.; Pasay City Vice Mayor Antonio Calixto, and former Laguna vice governor Edwin Olivarez.

ABANTE

Halatang-halata Naman Sila!

Ni Mayor Jesse Robredo

11/15/09

Grace Padaca, Ifugao Gov. Teddy Baguilat at dating Bukidnon Cong.

A Tough Balancing Act for Noynoy

By Harvey Keh

…As these realignments continue, more and more civil society groups who are actively supporting the candidacy of Aquino and his runningmate, Senator Mar Roxas, are becoming wary of the possible political accommodations and transactional politicking that may occur. So far the LP has done well in selecting local and national candidates that represent the kind of new politics and good governance that Aquino personifies but there are persistent rumors that certain politicians with very shady backgrounds and are known to be corrupt are now trying their best to be part of the LP-led People’s Coalition Senate slate and be openly endorsed by Aquino. This is no longer surprising given that Aquino has continued to lord it over the field of current Presidentiables in the recent surveys that have been conducted. As we grow closer to the deadline set by the COMELEC for filing of the certificate of candidacies, you can expect that there will be more of these “highly-experienced” political operators and politicians who will try their best to wiggle their way inside the inner circle of Aquino and Roxas. They will offer Aquino and LP their political machinery and wide network of supporters in exchange for a formal endorsement as an official candidate.

MANILA TIMES

From Ashes

By Eirene Jhone Aguila

I have always had so much respect for someone who manages to rise from the ashes and a state of loss and despair to create a happier, more beautiful and meaningful life. There is nothing wrong with being born into fame, influence and comfort too—but truly there is something much to be said of persons who do not allow themselves to play the role of victim for too long.

These persons, rather take stock of what they have left, gather themselves together, stand up and create a better life—without cursing and blaming, and without regret and being stuck in nostalgia too much.

On Friday evening, together with my mom, I attended the opening of the exhibit of Miss Juana Change (Mae Paner) dubbed Pangatawanan Mo Nah held in the Vargas Museum, UP Diliman Campus. It was perhaps one of the best socially relevant art exhibits I have been to in a while and it was definitely worth it!
